Dinner: Get Out Your Chequebook

If you’re looking for somewhere nice to take out relatives, a significant other or splurge on yourself, here are the more pricey dinner options - make sure to bring a back-up bank card.

I'll start with the classic tourist favorite, the Zeughauskeller. If you haven't already been there, this Swiss restaurant is the ultimate place to visit if you’re interested in tasting some traditional food: bratwurst, rösti, and schnitzel. It is located in a 15th-century building on Bahnhofstrasse.

However, if you’re looking for something more exotic, try the traditional Middle-Eastern food in either Cafe Bebek or Maison Blunt. Bebek is known for its large tables and mezze styled eating concept, where everyone gets to try a little bit of everything. Sitting at the table almost feels like you are at home eating with a bunch of friends. Maison Blunt is the ‘sister’ restaurant of Bebek and is considered much more casual and lively. This space includes intimate smaller tables, a completely different dining experience to Bebek, but serves the same Middle-Eastern influenced cuisine.

Located in a beautiful 19th-century inspired building, Terrasse has a delicious Italian and Mediterranean menu. The sophisticated restaurant also has a sunny outside dining area which never fails to be busy in the summer months. Tao’s known for its heavenly Thai and Japanese fusion cuisine is not only a restaurant but includes a lounge, smoker's booth, bar and club (called Icon). Located in central Zurich, this restaurant has impeccable food and service which is well worth your money. Baur au Lac is a 5-star hotel Zurich that's known for its restaurant; however, I have been told that it is really only worth going if you go into the Baur au Lac Terrasse to dine. The terrasse is best enjoyed with a friend, a drink in hand, and some light aperitifs to share.

Now, on to the Michelin star restaurants. Hidden in Rüschlikon is Die Rose ‘Tobias Bulholzer’, a 1 Michelin star restaurant with 16 Gault Millau points. The menu is composed of 5 small dishes (which can be requested to be both vegan or vegetarian) for 95 francs. The very best has been left for last, and it is the magnificent Dolder Grand. The 5-star hotel includes a restaurant with 2 Michelin stars, 9 points and Gault Millau's Chef of the Year; Heiko Nieder. A selection of either a six or ten-course menu (with vegetarian alternatives) makes for an incredible gastronomic experience. If you’re looking dine glamorously, make sure to book well in advance as The Dolder is an extremely popular restaurant.
