Have a free block and want to grab something more exotic to eat than cafeteria food? Need somewhere to work on a group project with friends? Want to take your family out for Mother's Day? We have the perfect lunch places for every occassion listed here for you.
Haus Hiltl is the world's oldest vegetarian restaurant and an all-time favorite for locals. It is located on the corner of Sihlstrasse - just off Bahnhofstrasse. Whether or not you are vegetarian or vegan, there are options of delicious Indian, Asian, Mediterranean and Swiss influenced cuisine for everyone's preferences. Food is served in the 100 dish buffet, a la carte, or even for takeaway if you don't have much time. Hiltl is well known to be a family-friendly place, but it's also great for a casual work lunch if you want to work on a group project in a relaxed atmosphere. Looking for a place to have a casual lunch and cocktail place in the summer months? Hidden on the fourth floor of PKZ, overlooking Bahnhofstrasse lies the Hiltl Dachterasse, including a restaurant, bar, and of course a buffet. On a sunny day, eat your meal on one of the two green terraces, decorated with plenty of tropical plants. Scattered around town are also Hiltl “minis” called Tibits, these are essentially just smaller versions of Hiltl with salad bars and healthy smoothies.
Sushi in Zurich, where should you look? Negishi and Jelmoli's Sushi Bar Nippon Food are the places you want to go for good quality sushi. In Zurich, it's worth splurging on high-quality handmade sushi instead of a chain restaurant's prepacked selections. If you’re looking for somewhere even more classy, Fujiya of Japan is a restaurant where your tepanyaki is cooked on a hot stove right in front of you. If you're feeling extremely boujee, you can try their CHF 150 Wagyu beef from Australia.
Bauschaenzli, a classic in the middle of summer. This restaurant and beer garden, open from April to September, is surrounded by water as it lies on the Limmat river. It serves everything from Bratwurst and fries to fresh fish and salads. It's the perfect place to go if you're hungry after a festival like Sechseläuten or Street Parade. Another well-known favorite of Zurich's students is Milchbar, hidden in a secluded courtyard by Paradeplatz, this cafe is most commonly visited for a lazy lunch with friends. The outside seating area is covered with faux fur covers and blankets during the colder months, which means a coffee outside in the winter is not off the menu. Milchbar serves a range of European dishes and everything from pastries and flammkuchen to delicious vegetarian meals. If you’re craving comfort food instead, head over to the Spaghetti Factory. It's a short walk from the Zentral Bibliotek in Zurich (where many students go to study), and perfect for taking a well-deserved study break. While you're there, check out their black-and-white photo booth, where you can take free pictures to keep the memories from a nice day.
After a long week, spoil yourself by heading to the Sunday champagne brunch. A well known Zurich rooftop bar-restaurant is Rooftop OOO, referred to everyone by its shop name: Modissa. I would say it has one of the best atmospheres, cozy and lively at the same time. It's known for always being busy, but if you don't mind waiting for 10 minutes, you'll surely find a place. The entrance is through the shop throughout the day, so you can always combine a snack with a little shopping spree. Whether you want to grab coffee with a friend on the sunny terrasse, try their infamous blue ice tea, or share a bottle of wine with dinner and a friend, Modissa never fails to be a great option.
