Oktoberfest - The Oktoberfest is a Volksfest, a traditional German festival, held annually in Munich with around six million people from around the world attending. Luckily, Zurich offers a smaller version held in Bauschänzli (near Bürkliplatz on the Zurich lake) if you want to spare the six hour train ride. The Zürcher Oktoberfest is held from the 10th of October to the 9th of November. If you're new to the German-speaking world, you have to try the traditional German beer served one-liter glasses as well as the buttery pretzels, sausages and händl (grilled chicken).
The atmosphere in the Oktoberfest tent is always lively and joyful, with around 800 people attending at the busiest times. If you want to grab a spot before it gets too hectic, reserve a table with friends! It costs around CHF 50.
The official dress code for men is usually Lederhosen (brown suede pants with suspenders), and Dirndl dresses for the women. They offer live music Monday to Thursday from 17.00 - 22.45, on Fridays and Saturdays from 13.00 - 15.00 / 17.00 - 22.45, and on Sunday’s from 11.00 - 17.45.
Khalid Concert - Khalid is an American R&B singer who will be coming to Zurich to perform from his brand new album “Free Spirit”. On October 8th at 18:00, he will be coming to the Samsung Hall in Dübendorf - his first concert in Switzerland. He will be having Mabel and Raye as special guest performers, who you might know for their hits “Don’t Call Me Up” and “Decline”. A seated ticket costs 70 CHF and the standing tickets cost 65 CHF, but if you're interested, make sure to buy the tickets soon as they're quickly selling out!
Mabel Concert - Mabel is an English pop singer who rose to fame within the past two years. You've probably heard her songs “Don’t Call Me Up” and “Mad Love” on the radio (or more likely your Spotify playlist). She'll be coming to the Plaza club in Zurich on Tuesday the 25th of February 2020 at 20:00. The regular ticket costs 46.30 CHF. If you can't wait until the Winter to see her, make sure to buy tickets to the Khalid concert in October, where she'll be performing as a warm-up act.
Knabenschiessen - Knabenschiessen, originating in 1889, is one of the oldest traditional target shooting competitions in Switzerland. It usually takes place annually over a weekend in mid-September alongside a fair. It is organized by the City of Zurich Rifle Association in Albisguetli. Boys and girls can exhibit their shooting skills, but only if they fulfil specific requirements: they have to be between 13 and 17 years old and either live or be enrolled in a school in the canton of Zurich.
Usually around 4,500 boys and girls register for the competition, all seeking to be named “the king of shooters”!
On the slope of Uetliberg, at the shooting range at Albisguetli, thousands of people from all over Switzerland come to watch the competition and afterwards enjoy the large fair nearby. There is something for every person of any age: delicious food, sweets, rides, and market stands selling all kinds of handmade objects. Last year, around 800,000 people visited the fair.
Illuminarium Zürich - The Iluminarium is a lights show performed at the Landesmuseum right next to the main train station in Zurich. It usually takes place in the Winter from mid-November until the end of December. The front courtyard of the museum is free for all visitors at any time of the day. It offers a magical Winter landscape full of lights, music and illumination as well as a variety of food, sweets and drinks including mulled wine and glowing cotton candy. There is a Lights Palace presenting installations providing a cozy atmosphere to sit down and chat with friends. The bar offers glow-in-the-dark cocktails and drinks. In the back area of the courtyard, visitors can watch a 25 minute light show for which they need to buy a ticket costing 13.50 CHF for adults, 8.50 CHF for teenagers and 5.50 CHF for children. It includes projections and installations for the children, showing the mythical cyclops Yuki and her friends travelling to faraway planets. The show can be viewed from 5 o’clock in the afternoon until 10 o’clock in the evening.
The Jules Verne Panoramabar - Located in the center of Zurich, the Jules Verne Panoramabar offers a chance to experience a unique 360 degree view of the city whilst enjoying some excellent wine, exclusive champagne or, for those of you who are still underage, delicious alcohol-free cocktails.
