If you are looking for an excursion to get a peek of some of the infamous valleys of Switzerland, you could start off with a trip to Arosa. With its impressive range of mountain peaks all around, Arosa Lenzerheide is just as attractive for extended hiking tours in summer as it is for snow sports in the winter. To get there, make sure you hop on the Arosa Line in Chur for some spectacular views from the comfort of a train.
Whether you are going alone or as a family, the tour takes you on an unforgettable journey with scenery that will make you hold your breath. The Arosa Line rises 1000 metres in altitude. The journey through Chur starts at a leisurely pace. However, shortly after the city borders, the red train turns into a mountain railway, steeply ascending to Arosa. The Rhaetian Railway train first meanders through Chur: passing by the city walls, the Maltese Tower and the Upper Gate (Obertor).
Then it winds its way through the pristine nature of the Schanfigg mountain landscape. Shortly before arriving at Arosa, the train crosses the Langwieser viaduct, located high above the River Plessur. If you are afraid of heights, I would suggest you skip this tour because this journey will make you feel as though you are almost flying.
The duration of the trip is approximately an hour. I have been on this train before and I must warn you that there are no catering services on the train. So remind yourself to bring a snack before you leave if you haven’t eaten so that you don't get hangry. To book your ticket, find the timetable and search train connections, click here. However, I have good news for you if you have a Swiss Travel Pass or a GA travelcard - you don't even need to buy a ticket, the journey's free!
